“She believed she could, so she did”
If you came up to me a year ago and told me that I was going to be in the top 10 of the 90-Day I would have never believed you.
People who know me the best would not describe me as being the most athletic type. I was that little 5-year-old girl who sat on the soccer field picking the daisies during the game. The first time I ever stepped into a gym was last year. I joined Life Time Fitness in Scottsdale on a complete whim. I woke up and decided I was going to join a gym. So why would I believe you? I was comfortable with who I was. I was 5 foot 6 inches and weighed 163 pounds. I was content. I was just looking for something new to try and the gym is what I found.
My story began back in 2011 when my parents got a divorce. I chose to live with my father, who worked 40 plus hours and was new to being a single dad. He didn’t have time to cook so we found ourselves eating out for most meals which became our bonding time. Over the years much didn’t change other than both our schedules getting more and more busy. My dad continued to work a lot trying to make ends meet. I was fulltime student and working three jobs to pay for school, so our eating habits never improved because it was easier for us to say, “Hey let’s meet here” instead of going home and preparing a huge meal between jobs.
A big struggle in my life was the loss of my little brother, who drowned accidently while I was in high school. More now than ever, as my other little brothers and sisters grow older, I have come to realize how important life is and that how I was treating my body was not right. I began to think about what I was putting in my body and how it was going to affect my body in the long term. I realized it was time for a change but the real motivation didn’t come until my trainer, Jamie Meng, introduced me to the 90-Day. I knew right then and there that this is the motivation that I needed. The problem was I only found out several days before the start day, so I had no time to get myself mentally prepared for the long journey that I was about to take. I was juggling three jobs everyday, starting at 6 am at a local daycare center, going to work at Streets of New York pizza and ending my nights around 11 p.m. after working a shift at Cold Stone Creamery. Where the heck was I going to find time to do cardio or eat healthy? Not only did I work a lot but what 22 year old wants to give up her social life for three months? It didn’t matter now because it was time to make a change. I told Jamie that I accepted the challenge and she offered everything she had to help me and support me along the way. I accepted this challenge knowing it was going to be tough but didn’t realize how tough until I started!
We started with the basics of cutting out all processed foods. She had me coming in to do cardio every single day and meeting her two to three times a week for weights. I found time after work or before work or in between, but I made sure that I got to Lifetime to do my cardio. After a week or two, this became routine. I ate three main meals a day and had snacks in between meals. Every week I went to the grocery store and bought a week worth’s of food and prepared it as soon as I got home. This made it easy to grab if I was in a hurry and made it less tempting to cheat by going through drive thru. Jamie came up with all my diets that changed every few weeks as we progressed and when she was feeling nice she would throw in a Kit Kat candy bar. Jamie understood me! She knew when I was close to breaking down and she was always there for me to make sure I didn’t give up. She is the biggest reason why I did so well in this challenge– because of her support! And when I hit my plateau she had me begin the Detox. My diet didn’t change much with the Detox but as soon as it was done I had lost nine pounds. The key to our success was something that she had told me from the beginning but I had a hard time grasping it because at the time I wasn’t ready for the change. But when I was ready I accepted it. That key was eating right! When you add eating right along with the daily cardio it’s amazing to see the results. With every step along the way, every change in the diet I progressed, and she made sure of that.
After doing the 90-Day I have gained so much more confidence in myself that I didn’t even realize I was lacking. I started this competition weighing 163 pounds, and 90 days later — almost 50 pounds — I weighed in at 113.5 pounds! The number of people who walk up to me and say, “Wow you look great,” or even ask me for help on their own weight loss is such an amazing feeling. And with the education that Jamie has given me I feel comfortable informing people on the way to a healthier lifestyle. This was one of the toughest things I have ever done not only physically but mentally as well and I’m glad that Jamie was there for my support because without her I would have quit many times. But she was always there to talk to and to reassure that everything was okay. If you asked me that same question now about being in the top 10 of the 90-Day I would not only say “Yes” to that but I would have enough confidence to say, “I will be number 1!”
