So, there I was staring at a computer screen having just signed up for the 90-Day Challenge, when it hit me. Just like all my races and events, the overwhelming optimism and excitement that begins when I look at the event gives way to the realization that I have a lot of hard work and dedication in front of me. It goes without saying, I’m a big guy. Tall, large build, and only recently have I become this heavy.

My ultimate goal in the 90-Day Challenge was to put myself in a position to win. A sub-goal was to train for a 70.3 Triathlon (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run). It struck me as just ambitious enough to challenge my training, while holding me accountable to a demanding commitment. I dedicated myself completely to a 20-week training plan; 6 days a week, often working out 2-to-3 times a day. My training schedule has been difficult. I’ve had to plan ahead and be creative to get the work done, and am very proud to say that I have yet to miss a workout.

But my biggest motivator didn’t show up until the second week of the challenge, when I found out my wife was pregnant with our first child. Nothing could possibly inspire me more than the desire to be a healthy father who is active with his children. My favorite childhood memories are those of us playing outside and participating in sports. My parents were always active, and I would like to create the same environment for my children. Where I was originally driven to be healthy for myself, I am more determined now than ever to set an example as a father.

I am excited for the adventures a new child will bring and the new role I will play in my little one’s life. However, having a pregnant wife can prove to be a challenge. In one word, TEMPTATION. My wife is typically a very healthy eater, and extremely fit. Now, not two weeks into my weight loss journey, my wife is eating for two, and she has CRAVINGS. It didn’t take me long to learn that these cravings didn’t quite jive with my nutrition plan. As an example, we were dining at a restaurant and I ordered an egg white omelet. My wife on the other hand, driven by cravings, ordered a slice of chocolate cake with ice cream. She is very sweet about not trying to tempt me. When I ask if it’s good, she’ll say “No, tastes like cardboard. You wouldn’t like this at all.” Then proceed to lick the plate clean. It has been an unusual shift these last few months. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve gained a new perspective that will serve me better as I transition out of this challenge into my regular routine. I am confident that I have the knowledge and willpower to make well-balanced decisions, even in the face of temptation.

I cannot emphasize enough the critical role Life Time has played in my weight loss journey. I entered the challenge needing data; specifically, my metabolic rate, my heart rates zones, and how to train in them appropriately. My wife had the foresight to sign me up for an Active Metabolic Assessment, which she also had the humor to call a ‘gift’. As part of the assessment, I had the opportunity to talk with a Dietitian and Metabolic Coach. The assessment results, along with their insight, set me up to train harder and smarter. Not only has my fitness level improved, but my metabolic plan accelerated my weight loss.

The facilities and classes at Life Time made a huge impact on my training. The pool always had an open swim time and lane; I never had to wait for a treadmill and the Edge Cycle classes pushed my cycling to a new level. The Edge instructors kept me motivated and focused on the heart rate zones. I credit Life Time for exposing me to the sport of triathlon and providing every amenity I need to train.

Since signing up for the 90-Day Challenge, I have set my mind to pushing my limits. I recently completed an adventure race, and signed up for two marathons, a two-day triple triathlon, and of course, the 70.3 Triathlon. After I complete those, I am committed to finding more, continuing my fitness challenge far beyond the 90-Day Challenge.

I also need to continue to eat well. During the Challenge, I tracked my caloric intake for every meal. Not only did this allow me to track the calories I consumed, but gave me the information I needed to make good decisions. By weighing and measuring all of my meals, I gained perspective on my how previous food choices were far beyond my needs.

The Life Time staff and training classes have helped me tremendously in reaching and pushing far beyond my goals. As I’ve achieved one goal on my list, I’ve added another. Lastly, and most importantly, I have the greatest motivator of all: I will soon be a Dad! Looking back at my challenges, motivations, and goals, I couldn’t be more proud of completing the 90-Day Challenge. It has been one of the most difficult and rewarding experiences of my life. I am confident that this journey has prepared me for all of the new, hard, fun and BIG adventures that await me.
