The Life Time 90-day challenge has helped me to feel like the most beautiful, confident, and happiest bride I can be! The challenge, as well as the Life Time community, has not only made a difference in my life but the life of my family as well.
I grew up in a household where it was common to eat fast food several times a week, if not daily. Sitting in front of a TV mindlessly munching on chips was second nature. And no one blinked an eye if an entire bag of Oreos disappeared in a day. Although I became more health-conscious as I grew older, I still retained many of my same habits. I was always an active person and the lifestyle I was living had not caught up to me yet. The same was not true, however, for the rest of my family. My parents had been overweight ever since I can remember and were starting to get medical complications.
With the wedding just around the corner in June I knew we had to partake in the challenge. My fiancé and I are both very competitive in nature so we figured it would not only be a competition against others but amongst each other. We signed up for the Transformation Challenge together. After much coaxing, I also got my parents to join Life Time and join the Weight Loss Challenge.
Family time used to revolve around meals, as it does in many families. Life Time gave us a way to replace that. Now our workouts compose of our much-cherished time spent together. Rather it be poking fun at each other as we attempted to touch our toes unsuccessfully, to complaining about which muscles are the sorest, to challenging each other to lift more weight, run faster, or go longer. Between planning a wedding, graduating from medical school, and buying a house, my time over the last few months has been severely limited. At times I had to ride the stationary bike so I could flip through slides to study for my next board exam. The gym often became my most valued time of the day as it was often the only time I got to spend with my parents or my fiancé. Not to mention it played a HUGE role in my stress relief!
With the help of the Life Time trainers and nutritionists, one of the biggest changes I made was in the improvement of my diet. They quickly had me on a high-protein, high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet. We also began supplementing with BCAA’s, Whey Protein, and Omega-3 fish oil. As my diet improved so did the quality of my workouts. I felt like I had more energy and was able to recover quicker. My lifts started to skyrocket! I quickly surpassed well over 300 lbs in squat and deadlift. I continually hit new PR’s on all my lifts, including 170 lbs on bench press. As I became stronger and leaner my confidence started to soar as well.
Our cardio routine also changed drastically. We used to do moderate steady-state cardio until the Life Time trainers introduced us to HIIT- High intensity interval training and taught us how to use our heart rate to get the most out of our cardio workouts. After starting HIIT I began to see drastic changes in my muscle definition, especially in my midsection. Three months ago I never even dreamed of having the abs I do now!
Above all else, it was the simple encouragement and positive attitudes that everyone in Life Time conveyed every day that kept us motivated. Life Time is genuinely a community. Our trainer, Heath, was our rock. He was constantly hooking us up with nutrition advice, new lifts to try, and introducing us to new training modalities! It wasn’t just him though; all the trainers began taking us under their wing. They were continually pushing us, rather it was giving us ways to break through a plateau, pointers on our lifting technique, or roping us into the various activities set up that day, like the lifting competitions or the Alpha: You vs You Challenge. The inspiration didn’t end at the trainers. We started getting compliments and congratulations on our transformation from other Life Time goers as well. We met others who had previously done the competition and had numerous other people tell us about their own success stories.
As a family we made lifelong, sustainable changes in our diet and workout routine. Many of them simple changes to make our workouts more efficient and nutrition modifications that we now wished we had implemented years ago. As a new physician much of what I learned will also benefit me in leading my patients to greater weight loss/fitness success. Over the 90-day Challenge my parents lost a combined 50 lbs with goals to lose even more before the wedding. My fiancé went from 20% BF to 9.3% and I went from 21.3% down to 10.4%. We can both see noticeable differences in our looks, strength, and energy. With so many wonderful changes happening in our lives right now, the Life Time 90-Day Challenge has really been the icing on the cake. It has made me truly feel better than I ever thought I could, just in time to strut my stuff down the isle (and in a bikini in on our honeymoon) to embark on a healthy, happy marriage!
