2016 Spring Weight Loss Finalist
*Results not typical
It all started one afternoon at my son’s birthday party. My family and I were sitting around eating pizza, drinking beer, having cake and ice cream, and I overheard my wife who had just started dieting a couple of weeks ago talking about how hard it was to lose weight when everybody around her was eating whatever they wanted. I felt so bad for her and knew that she needed some support and somebody to lose weight with. It just happened to be that I was overweight also and would be the perfect partner for her. I thought about all the times she had helped me with the crazy things that I wanted to do and decided I would start dieting along with her. But I knew that dieting alone would not get her the results she wanted. So the next day, she and I sat down and looked at the Life Time web page, seeing all they had to offer! We called the club and by the afternoon we were taking a tour of the facility. We both agreed that becoming members was the next step. We sat down with trainers that week, discussed our goals and got plans on how to start. It just so happened that the 90-Day Challenge was set to start in a couple of weeks and I thought I would get in just to take part in the event, never once thinking about the prizes. At my initial weigh-in with Dave Galler, it was worse than even I had thought. I had 33% body fat and was tipping the scales at over 200 pounds and right then, I thought “This is ridiculous!” Now the event that I had signed up for just to be part of something became much more serious to me.
I decided it was time to get busy! My family was all the motivation I needed. My daughter was so excited by all the balloons and posters for the challenge and she had many questions about the whole process. As I explained everything to her she became more and more excited. The weekly weigh-ins were her thing. I think after week one I was number 575 or something and she thought that was great! I thought if she liked 575 then she would really like 475 so I went for it and then everything just started rolling. My daughter would ask me every week what number I was now and I knew I couldn’t let her down, I needed to bring back a better number every week. She can be very demanding for a 9-year-old. When I cracked the top 100, I thought about my 16-year-old son and how I always get on his case about working hard. I thought this would be a perfect time for me to show him that hard work pays off. He seemed very uninterested in the whole process, until I started talking about being in the top 25 in the nation, and then he too became interested in my weekly numbers. Now the whole family was involved and I knew I had no choice but to give it my best effort. I continued to follow the plan given to me by Dave Galler. I ate often but small portions, continued my weights and cardio and entered the top 5, which was very exciting for me. I began to think I may have a chance at winning this 90-Day Challenge. That is when I had to harness my willpower to stay on course. Dave helped me with this with his weekly check-ins. I’m sure he was checking in with many people but he made me feel like he was on my team and that we were in this together. Dave was great, never pushy. He always asked me what I needed help with and what he could do. His plan was working and he was there to follow it all the way to the end. It felt like I had a whole team of people counting on me and supporting me.
I did not make it all the way to my goal but I did give it my best effort. At weigh-outs, I came in at 149lbs and my body fat had dropped below 15% which I was still happy with. But more important, I have made a lot of changes such as what I eat, when I eat, how much I eat, and now working out is not something I put at the end of my to-do list. I know there is still work to do, so I will be seeing you in the 60-Day Challenge this summer.
The 90-Day Challenge has been a life-changing experience. I can’t thank my family enough for all their support and encouragement! Without them, none of this would have been worth it. Again I would like to thank Dave Galler for his incredible knowledge of the human body and for his continued support. It was truly a blessing to have him on my team. I would also like to thank all the Life Time staff that helped me with questions I had along the way. But most important, my wife who started this whole thing is down 25 pounds. She is looking great and continues to work hard. She feels better and she is starting to get back some of the energy that she missed so much. The 90-Day Challenge has been a wonderful experience. Thanks again!
