I recently became a member of Life Time in June. Before that my exercise and eating habits were anything but good. Over the course of 6 years I gained over 100 pounds and as a result started experiencing substantial health problems, including lower back pain, shortness of breath, chest pain, and heart palpitations. I have a friend and co-worker who is a Life Time member and I told him about all the issues I was having with my weight. He told me about Life Time and all the amenities they have for your workouts and leisure, and that helped motivate me to take a tour.
After I joined Life Time, they set me up with a complimentary training session with Chris. I weighed 293.6 pounds with 42.9% body fat and I was at a 20 Visceral Fat Level. To say I was a little embarrassed for my initial weigh-in at the gym is an understatement. But Chris encouraged me by making me feel like my goals were attainable and by showing me some exercises that worked for me. And he started me on my A.M and P.M. Men’s Multivitamin, Omega-3 Fish Oil, and Whey Protein Shakes from the LifeCafe. For the next 2 weeks I continued my new workout routine and lost 11.4 pounds.
Life Time had also set me up with a complimentary myHealthScore. In the beginning of July I met with Andre for myHealthScore testing and my ending score was 68. My TC/HDL Ratio, Body Fat, Aerobic Capacity, Strength, and Flexibility scores were all bad.
Over the next few weeks I noticed all the signs and promotions for the 90-Day Challenge, but didn’t sign up right away. As the start of the Challenge came close I noticed posters with all the past winners and success stories. I finally decided to sign up to give me some extra motivation while trying to become a healthier me. I met with Terry on weigh-in day and set my goal of 90 pounds, which I thought was impossible. We set a plan for me to succeed in the Challenge. My starting weight was 279.2 pounds with 40.2% body fat and a 19 Visceral Fat Level.
On day one I was excited and determined. My first goal was to get to a point where I could actually wear my 90-Day wristband — it was too tight to wear around my wrist. I learned from my sessions with Chris and Terry to start my workouts slow, with an hour on the treadmill, 15 minutes on the stair climber and resistance training every other day. My first week I was down 12.8 pounds and this really sent my motivation into overdrive.
I spent the first 8 weeks of the Challenge trying to follow the guidance I had received when I first joined the gym, and followed my own diet plan that I thought was healthy. I had 2 points where I plateaued and my weight loss started to slow down. I was starting to get frustrated and felt like I wanted to give up when Sally emailed me congratulating on my success so far. She offered a consultation to talk about ways to pick my weight loss back up. She didn’t sugarcoat anything and showed me what I needed to change in my current diet and workout regimen.
After our consultation she had me sign up for nutrition coaching and TEAM Fitness classes. She put me on a 40-30-30 diet plan. Each of my meals now contained 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein and 30% fat. She also had me start going to the gym twice a day instead of once for a total of4 hours of workout and 30 minutes of sauna. Just3 days after our initial meeting and starting my new plan I lost 5.8 pounds. I had my motivation and determination back!
In the following weeks I noticed a drastic change both mentally and physically. I was dropping weight faster than ever before and I felt more alert and energized throughout the day. I never thought I would be able to work out in the mornings, but Sandy was a great motivator every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday in the TEAM Fitness class.
I met Stacy, the national leader on the women’s board, in the sauna with about3 weeks left in the Challenge and she became my inspiration. We started meeting for workouts and sauna and she was one of my strongest motivators and helped push me to achieve my goals in the end.
In the last days of the Challenge I had another health score done and I went from 68 to 92. I couldn’t believe there could be such a drastic change in such a short amount of time.
I want to thank Life Time, all the trainers who congratulated me every time they saw me, Sandy, and especially Stacy and Sally for pushing me so I could lose an incredible 40.8 pounds in the last4 weeks. I lost a total of 85.7 pounds and 18.6% body fat in 90 days. My journey and long-term goal of reaching 10% body fat don’t end here, but the 90-Day Challenge gave me a healthy start in the right direction.
