My name is Melanie and I appreciate that you are taking the time to read my very personal story. I am a wife and proud mother of three boys. My life has been devoted to taking care of my family. I studied social work in college so that I could help others. I love my life. However, throughout the years, I had forgotten to take care of myself. I had slowly gained weight and before I knew it, I was more than 75 pounds overweight and feeling uncomfortable in my own skin. Five years ago I was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. I had chemotherapy, radiation and a double mastectomy. It took me a year to get back to a place where I felt “normal” again. You would have thought that experience alone would have been a reality check to get my weight under control and get healthy, but apparently not. It wasn’t until Thanksgiving, 2015, that my world took the turn that changed everything. My son was diagnosed with cancer. When the doctor said those words to my husband and me, it dropped me to my knees. It was that moment that I realized that I had to be in better shape if I was going to care for my boy and help him through this intense treatment that he was about to begin. Remember that I had gone through something similar just five years ago and knew what he had to face.
As he was being a warrior, I realized that I needed to be his warrior mom. My husband suggested that as the stress of having a sick child was taking its toll on me, that I should turn to the gym as a place to “get away,” as he and my sons are avid gym goers. I decided that it couldn’t hurt and visited Life Time. When I saw the pictures of the 90-Day Challenge and its participants, I wished that I could do that. That was something only “other people do.” I spent several days thinking about the Challenge. I discussed it with my family, who were onboard and pushed me to do it. That’s all I needed to hear and all of a sudden my competitive spirit kicked in. I signed up and met with my new personal trainer Nick J. I was intimidated for sure, but Nick’s kindness, positive attitude and belief in me put me at ease.
I started the 90-Day Challenge and realized that it was difficult, but I could do it. With the results I started seeing, my excuses were disappearing. I was upping my game and beginning to feel good, really good. I signed up for more personal training sessions with Nick. He pushed me to levels of activity that I never knew I was capable of. We bonded and throughout the entire time, he never made me feel anything less than a “rock star.” I also joined TEAM weight loss. I didn’t know anyone in this class, but our trainer, Sherri, would always welcome new class members with a smile and open arms and have the existing teammates introduce themselves by sharing their names and a fun fact. The classes were tough. But I was making new friends and seeing results. I was becoming a real gym person. I also tried classes like Zumba and yoga. Try-It Tuesday classes were also something that I took advantage of weekly. I tried Boot Camp, nutrition classes and many others. As my son was getting better, I was getting thinner, stronger, and more confident.
Three times throughout the 90 days my son was hospitalized for a week. I stayed with him at the hospital day and night. My husband would come and relieve me so that I could get my workouts in and go to my classes. During that time, the LifeCafe was a lifesaver. I would finish my workouts and grab food from the cafe and bring it back to the hospital for us. Their food is always delicious, fresh, and healthy. It was also very convenient to purchase the supplements at the LifeCafe. These supplements aided me in working out more effectively by giving me increased energy and helping my muscles to recover more quickly.
As the 90-Day finish line approached, I had lost over fifty pounds. I am not quite done with my weight loss goals and have no intentions of ever giving up on myself again. I share and credit my accomplishments with the staff at Life Time, whose guidance and advice were vital to my success. One fun example of this support occurred when I was walking on the treadmill. Steven B. rallied all of the trainers over and they gave me a big rowdy Life Time cheer! I am going to continue being an active member, working out, eating in the cafe, using the pool during our hot summers and more importantly, making it a fun and healthy place to spend time with my family.
In the end, my 90-Day Challenge proved to be more then just a weight loss journey. It was a journey that allowed me to get through a difficult time. It was a journey that empowered me to regain my health and confidence. It was a journey that brought my family another avenue to spend time together doing things that were good for us. It was a journey that allowed me to show my children that if you put your mind to something that “in your lifetime” you can accomplish anything! By the way, my son is doing great!
